Description

The Angel is a former inn that is now part of the Lord Crewe Arms. It is located in Blanchland and was originally part of the outer court range of a medieval monastery. The building was remodeled and extended at the rear in the mid-18th century and underwent alterations, including a new roof, in the mid-19th century, likely by S.S. Teulon. It is constructed of rubble with cut and tooled dressings and features a slate roof.

The front elevation has two storeys plus an attic and consists of three bays. The central entrance has a renewed door with an 8-pane sash window above it, while the flanking bays contain margined sash windows. All openings are set in raised stone surrounds, except for a small 4-pane casement on the ground floor to the far right, which is in a 17th-century or earlier chamfered surround. The central gabled dormer features a tripartite window, and the steeply-pitched roof has two flanking stacks on each return.

The rear elevation includes a 20-pane sash stair window with intersecting glazing bars in the head, set within a raised round-arched surround that has imposts and a chamfered keystone. The rear roof slope displays a banded diaper pattern made of blue, purple, and green slate. Inside, the front section retains walls that are one metre thick from the medieval range, while the rear section features a staircase with stick balusters, a grip handrail, and moulded newels.
