Description

The war memorial outside St Mary's Abbey is a First World War memorial made of sandstone. It features a St. Cuthbert's cross with an ornamental head and a tall, slender tapering shaft. The shaft bears the inscription: "ERECTED/IN MEMORY/ OF/THE MEN OF/THIS /PARISH/WHO GAVE/THEIR LIVES IN/THE/GREAT WAR/1914 TO 1919".

The memorial is set on a plain rectangular plinth, which has the quotation "ALL THEY HAD THEY GAVE" on its front face. Below this, there is a two-stepped base. This simple memorial serves as a tribute to the fallen of the First World War.
