Description
The Hanworth War Memorial is a First World War memorial dedicated in 1920, with a plaque added later to honor those who fell in the Second World War. It was relocated to its current site in the 1970s.
Constructed from Cornish granite and York stone, with lead lettering, the memorial is situated at the northern corner of a plot at the junction of Main Street and Green Lane. It features a rough-hewn granite St Cuthbert’s cross that rises from a three-step pedestal. The base and upper step are made of rough-hewn granite, while the lower steps are composed of York stone from the late 20th or early 21st century. The front face of the base displays the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN PROUD REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 -1918 LIVE YE FOR ENGLAND, WE FOR ENGLAND DIED." The other faces list the 55 names of the fallen.
At the foot of the pedestal, there is a small rough-hewn plinth that holds a slate tablet inscribed with: "IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES DURING THE 1939 - 1945 WAR."
