Description

The Nest is a cottage with an attached forge, dating from the 18th century and altered in the early 19th century. It is built of ashlar stone and has a pantiled roof. The building features a through-passage plan and includes a slightly later continuous outshut at the rear. It is a single-storey structure that was formerly equipped with a partial sleeping loft and has four irregular bays.

There is a lean-to porch with a panelled door located in the second bay. To the left of the porch, there is a 12-pane sash window, a 6-pane sash window to the right, and a 4-pane sash window at the extreme right. On the first floor, to the right of the door, there are two very small Yorkshire sash windows situated below the eaves, along with two blocked earlier windows.

The roof is steeply pitched and gabled, featuring raised coping, with a stack at the left end and a ridge stack to the right of the door. The lower two-bay forge to the right has a sliding door in the left bay and a blacksmith-type window to the right, also topped with a steeply pitched gabled roof and a brick end stack.
