Description

Preston Tower, also known as the old Preston Tower, is a 14th-century part of a tower house that was restored in 1864 by Henry Robert Baker Cresswell. The building is constructed from squared stone and features a Welsh slate roof. The remaining structure includes the south wall and two southern corner turrets of a larger hall-type tower house that originally had four towers, similar to Haughton Castle and Langley Castle. The rear wall was rebuilt in 1864.

The tower stands three storeys high and has a chamfered plinth. The centre is recessed and flanked by projecting turrets. In the middle, there is a boarded door set within a chamfered surround from the 16th or 17th century. Above the door are two slit windows, also with chamfered surrounds. The left turret has four similar windows, while the right turret has three. On the second floor, there is a large clock with a ceramic face inscribed with "H R B C," indicating the restorer. The tower features an embattled parapet, and the higher turrets have rounded corbels beneath the parapets. On the left side, there is a blocked, low, narrow 14th-century doorway with a pointed arch and chamfered surround. The rear also displays a similar clock face dated 1864.

Inside, the springing of the ground-floor vault is visible. The turrets contain pointed tunnel-vaulted chambers on each floor, along with three 16th or 17th-century fireplaces featuring chamfered surrounds, one of which has a lintel with a keystone. Numerous mason's marks can be found throughout the building. The 14th-century doorways leading into the turret rooms have pointed arches and chamfered surrounds.
