Description

The garden features to the east, south, and west of Doxford Hall, listed as Grade II, include balustrades, terrace walls, steps, piers, gates, statues, and a sundial. The east terrace and garden were designed in 1910 by Robert Mauchlen, while the south and west terraces likely date from the late 19th century. The walls are made of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings, except for the south and west balustrades, which are cast artificial stone on a squared-stone base. Notable elements include a lead statue and wrought iron gates.

The layout features terrace walls that are close to the house on the south and west sides. The east terrace wall faces a formal garden with a low internal terrace nearest the house, flanked by enclosures containing rectangular ponds. A central sundial is present, and the east corner sections have alcoves and benches, with a group of piers screening a circular pond and gateway.

The west terrace has a gateway at each end, while the south terrace features a projecting center section and a gateway at the east end. The east terrace wall includes central scrolly double gates flanked by low piers with balusters at angles and plant wells on top. Each side has 3-bay balustrades, and the ends have wing walls with downswept coping that flank rectangular ponds. Taller piers with plant wells are located at the west ends of the side walks, and seat alcoves at the east ends of the walks have open balustraded backs.

The sundial has an octagonal base with paired balusters and a circular shaft that carries a block with four dial faces and a moulded knob finial. A statue in the circular pond depicts a nude female holding a sea shell. The terminal gate features a large elliptical open panel with an overthrow displaying a seahorse design and a vase-of-flowers finial. The piers have flat-topped moulded caps, and the walls are flat-coped. Another statue, depicting a soldier with a crossbow, is located on a pier at the south-east corner.
