Description

The farm buildings to the east of Doxford Farmhouse, dated 1825, form a planned group of agricultural structures. The central south front features stone that has been horizontally tooled to a near-ashlar quality, while other sections are built from rubble with horizontally- tooled quoins and dressings. The roofs are primarily covered with Welsh slate, except for the inner west range which uses Scottish slates, and the outer west range which has synthetic grey slates.

The layout consists of a long east-west range that includes a central T-plan barn, with a watermill located on the west side of the rear wing. This arrangement encloses three yards, although the east end of the main range has been demolished, and the outer east range is now a separate block.

The main range features a two-storey, three-bay barn at its center. The slightly projecting central bay has a large round arch with an impost band and stepped voussoirs beneath a date tablet. The flanking bays contain slit vents and a square eaves band, topped with a hipped roof. The lower, two-storey, four-bay side sections include two pairs of segmental arches and low windows for the granary above. To the far left, beyond the inner west range, there is a single-storey section with another pair of segmental arches. The single-storey ranges between the yards have boarded doors in the side and end walls, along with hip-ended roofs. The outer west range displays sash and casement windows secured with external iron bars, and features a banded ridge stack.

On the rear elevation, the three-bay rear wing of the barn includes a lower mill to the right, which has a boarded door and double doors, along with a hip-ended roof. The two-storey side sections feature two boarded doors and a segmental arch in a recess for the original sliding door, with central boarded doors at the first-floor level (the right door accessed via an external stone stair) flanked by granary windows. Many of the windows are boarded below a six- or eight-pane upper section.

Inside, the front part of the barn contains five king-post trusses, while the flanking granaries are supported by collar-beam trusses. This group of farm buildings is noted for being unusually early and extensive in its planning. Later additions and covered yards are not considered of interest.
