Description

Primrose Cottage and Rose Cottage, located to the north-west of the World Bird Research Station in Glanton Village, are early to mid-18th century cottages of several builds. They are constructed from heavy squared rubble with large roughly-tooled quoins and dressings. The roofs are primarily covered with purple slate, except for the rear of Rose Cottage, which has pantiles, and Rose Cottage's outshuts, which are covered with Welsh slates, while Primrose Cottage's outshut features corrugated iron sheets.

Primrose Cottage is two storeys high with two bays. It has a central boarded door and 12-pane sash windows, except for a 4-pane sash window on the ground floor to the right. The right end gable is coped, and there are end stacks. Rose Cottage, located to the right, is a single storey with three bays. It features a boarded door between the left bays and 12-pane sash windows. The right end gable has reversed-stepped coping, and there is an axial stack on the ridge.

Inside, Rose Cottage has a chamfered fireplace with a set pot and old ironwork, along with original beamed ceilings. These cottages are believed to have been part of a row on the north side of the former village green before it was enclosed in the late 18th century. Rose Cottage, with its lobby-entrance plan, is noted as an unusually well-preserved example.
