GLANTON FRONT STREET NU 0714 (North side) Glanton Village

21/201 Primrose Cottage and Rose Cottage to north-west of World Bird Research Station GV II

Cottages, early to mid-C18 of several builds. Heavy squared rubble with large roughly-tooled quoins and dressings. Purple slate roof except for pantiles on rear of Rose Cottage; Welsh slates on Rose Cottage outshuts and corrugated iron sheets on Primrose Cottage outshut.

Primrose Cottage 2 storeys, 2 bays: Central boarded door; 12-pane sash windows except for 4-pane sash on ground floor right. Coped right end gable, end stacks. Rose Cottage, to right, 1 storey, 3 bays; boarded door between left bays; 12-pane sash windows. Reversed-stepped coping to right end gable; axial stack on ridge.

Interior: Rose Cottage has chamfered fireplace with set pot and old ironwork; original beamed ceilings.

These cottages are said to have formed part of a row on the north side of the former village green, before this was enclosed in the late C18.Rose Cottage, with its lobby-entrance plan, is an unusually well-preserved example.
