Description
The garden walls to the north of the World Bird Research Station date from around 1796 and incorporate an earlier 18th-century wall on the west side. Constructed from squared stone, the eastern wall stands approximately 3 metres high with a flat coping and connects to a lower wall at the southern end, which leads to a stable and coach-house at the rear of the World Bird Research Station. A similar wall is found on the north side. The western wall is 2 metres high, features gabled coping, and extends past the west end of Primrose Cottage.
These walls originally enclosed a formal garden behind The Mansion, which is now the World Bird Research Station. Since 1930, the area has been planted with a variety of indigenous and exotic trees and has been used as a bird sanctuary and study area.
