Description
HUMSHAUGH HAUGHTON NY 97 SW 2/233 Gateway 60 metres west of Haughton Castle, with attached walls and outbuildings
GV II
Gateway with attached walls and outbuildings, 1816 with later C19 alterations. Rubble with tooled-and-margined dressings; Welsh slate roofs. Castellated Gothic style. Gateway at west end of Castle precinct has chamfered segmental- pointed arch with projecting taller square tower on south and corbelled-out turret on north. Slit windows, except for two 3-light mullioned windows on north of tower; embattled parapets.
To north-east a tall enclosure wall with embattled coping, stepped up and down slope,runs east, south and east again to end in square tower close to north- east corner of Castle (q.v.); blind slits and square-headed well recess in first part.
To south-east a similar wall joins west wing of Castle; pent outbuildings on north have 3 boarded doors and several small windows.
To south-west tall garden wall with flat coping, ramped up beyond section with boarded door, continues for 100 metres alongside road.
