Description
The gateway, located 60 metres west of Haughton Castle, was built in 1816 and features later 19th-century alterations. Constructed from rubble with tooled-and-margined dressings, it is designed in a castellated Gothic style and has Welsh slate roofs. The gateway at the west end of the castle precinct includes a chamfered segmental-pointed arch, a taller square tower on the south side, and a corbelled-out turret on the north side. It has slit windows, with the exception of two three-light mullioned windows on the north side of the tower, and is topped with embattled parapets.
To the north-east, a tall enclosure wall with embattled coping runs east, south, and then east again, ending in a square tower near the north-east corner of the castle. This section features blind slits and a square-headed well recess. To the south-east, a similar wall connects to the west wing of the castle, while pent outbuildings to the north have three boarded doors and several small windows. To the south-west, a tall garden wall with flat coping ramps up beyond a section with a boarded door and continues for 100 metres alongside the road.
