Description
Wester Hall is a house built in 1732 for William Smith, as indicated by the name on the re-set dated lintel. The building incorporates older materials and was remodeled as a villa, with a servants' wing added in the early 19th century. The front is made of squared stone, with rubble returns, while the 19th-century parts are constructed from smaller rubble. The cut dressings are tooled and margined on the 19th-century sections, and the roofs are covered with Welsh slate.
The house has an L-shaped plan that has been infilled to form a rectangular block, with a wing to the northwest. The south front features two storeys and five bays. The central entrance has a fielded-panel door flanked by lights and a fanlight with radial glazing, all set within a segment-headed 19th-century arch. The windows are 12-pane sashes with raised wedge lintels and keystones. The hipped roof has two ridge stacks, one of which is stepped and banded, while the other is rendered.
To the left, the servants' wing has a two-bay end with a tall 18-pane sash stair window on the right and a 16-pane sash window with an 8-pane sash above on the left, all within alternating-block surrounds. The wing also has a hipped roof. The right return of the main block has two bays, featuring late 19th-century canted bay windows with 8-pane sashes and pyramidal roofs, with 12-pane sashes above and earlier blocked openings in between. The rear elevation includes a round-headed stair window with Gothick glazing bars.
Inside, there is an open-string stair with a wreathed and moulded handrail and stick balusters. Some 18th-century fittings, including cupboards, are also present.
