Description

Elwood House is a house built in the late 18th century, with additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It features an ashlar facade with a plinth, while the rest of the building is constructed from rubble. The roof is made of Lakeland slate and the house has two storeys. The main block displays rusticated quoins and a symmetrical three-bay facade. There are two semicircular steps leading up to a six-panelled door, which is set within a pedimented entablature that has a fluted frieze with paterae. On either side of the entrance are two-storey shallow canted bays with 12-pane sash windows. The ground and first floors have sill bands. To the left and rear, there is a mid-20th century lower addition that has small-paned sash windows.

The right side of the house also projects to the rear and is mainly from the early 19th century, featuring a square stone porch. The gabled roof has kneelers and flat coping, along with two stone end stacks.

Inside, the house contains a late 18th-century staircase with slender turned newels, six-panelled doors, and two fireplaces that have fluted surrounds.
