Description

The Stables Bar and Restaurant is a former stable and coach house, now serving as a public bar and restaurant, located to the east of Hall Garth. It dates from the early 18th century and was restored and altered around 1980. The building is constructed of squared limestone and has renewed pantiles. It features a shallow U-plan layout, with a central section, a wing on the left, and double-range wings on the right, all under a two-span roof. The structure is two storeys high and has a large central opening with a replaced door and glazing. The fenestration is scattered, mainly consisting of replaced casements, some set under old rubbed brick arches. Above the central doorway is a round-arched window, and there are blocked breathers present. An external stone stair is located on the inner left return. The roof is steeply pitched with swept eaves and is hipped over the wings. A notable feature is the 2.0-metre tall curving, detached wall with flat coping and square end piers topped with low pyramidal caps, along with short return sections beyond the piers. An altered single-storey range on the right and a late 20th-century rear addition are not of special interest. The building is included for its group value.
