Description

Coatham Mill, also known as the Granary, Miller's Loft, and Mill House, is a former water mill that has been converted into four dwellings. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and has undergone alterations around 1860, 1884, and 1980. The building is constructed of squared limestone with rubble returns and some brick infill, topped with a Welsh slate roof and a brick chimney stack. Originally three storeys high, it is now a single storey with an attic.

On the ground floor, there are six openings, including a replaced door and a three-light casement on the left, along with four replaced casements in altered openings on the right. A gabled former loading bay above extends beyond the eaves and is flanked by single dormers, all featuring replaced casements. A large ridge stack with a top band is located to the left, and there is an external stone stair on the right return. The altered rear has replaced doors and casements, some of which are set under rubbed brick lintels, along with four late 20th-century dormers.

Inside, the dwelling known as Coatham Mill retains an exceptionally large iron water wheel in a pit, complete with flanking drive shafts, belt pulleys, and gearing. The mill was originally built to produce shoe thread and was converted to grind corn in the 1860s, undergoing extensive refurbishment following a fire in 1884. This building is a rare survival of a water mill in County Durham.
