Description
The White Lion Inn is a public house dating to the late 17th and early 18th centuries, with an early 19th-century wing and later alterations. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone, with a wing of coursed limestone rubble. The roof is tiled in concrete, with rebuilt brick stacks at the left- and right-ends, and two rear axial stacks.
The main building is two storeys and an attic, with a four-window front. The first floor has four two-light stone mullion and transom windows, with small chamfers in moulded stone surrounds and stone sills. The ground floor mirrors this with three similar windows, the window to the far right being a 6/6-pane sash window dating to the early 18th century. A moulded stone doorcase is located to the centre right, featuring a heavy keystone, pulvinated frieze, and moulded cornice, sheltering a part-glazed six-panel door. Two gabled dormers with 20th-century glazing are visible in the attic, along with one 20th-century rooflight. There is a shallow plinth and moulded strings above both the first and second floors.
A two-storey, one-window wing extends to the right, with a 6/6-pane sash window on the first floor and a 2/2-pane sash window on the ground floor. A pair of plank doors provide access to the rear.
The interior contains a late 17th/early 18th-century scissored string stair with turned balusters, extending from the ground to the first floor. The upper floors remain uninspected. A moulded beam is present in the front bar, showing ogee stops; the ground floor has been opened out and significantly altered. A late 19th-century two-storey brick extension is located at the rear.
