Description

2 and 4 Gloucester Street are a pair of early 19th century houses, possibly originally almshouses. They are constructed of coursed squared limestone with ashlar dressings, and have a Welsh slate roof. The building features a stone right-end stack with two octagonal ashlar flues topped with castellated details, a rebuilt brick ridge stack, and a brick left-end stack which appears to be shared with the adjacent property at No. 6 Gloucester Street.

The front elevation has a five-window arrangement over two storeys. The first floor has five two-light stone-mullion windows with leaded lights and hoodmoulds; the second window from the right is blind. The ground floor has four similar windows, with two to the right (in No. 2) having 20th-century timber mullions and casements. There are three doorways: to the left (No. 4), two plank doors are set within chamfered stone surrounds with basket-arched heads and hoodmoulds; and to the right (No. 2), a 19th-century four-panel door is contained within a similar triple surround, with blocked doorways flanking it, all under a single hoodmould. A shallow plinth is present, with quoins to the right corner. The gable on the right has moulded coping with a carved kneeler. A corbelled-out stone plaque, set in a moulded surround and bearing no inscription, is situated on the face of the stack, expressed in ashlar on the upper storey, and is flanked by two single-light windows with chamfered stone surrounds and hoodmoulds. A single 20th-century patent rooflight is visible on the front roof slope. The interior has not been inspected. According to local accounts, a central doorway once led to an alley called The Paen.
