Description
19 Gloucester Street is a late 17th-century building that was formerly known as No. 23 Gloucester Street and was originally the rear wing of that property. It has undergone 20th-century alterations. The structure is built from coursed squared limestone rubble and features an imitation stone slate roof, with a rebuilt stone stack on the right side. The building has one gable facing Sheppard's Place and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a two-window range.
On the first floor, there is one 20th-century two-light timber casement window set in a chamfered stone surround with stone mullions and transoms that have been cut out, alongside another two-light chamfered stone-mullion window fitted with 20th-century single-pane glazing. Above, in the gable, there is a small 20th-century window beneath a concrete lintel. The ground floor features a two-light chamfered stone mullion-and-transom window and a 20th-century part-glazed door to the right. A moulded string runs along the right side of the facade over the ground and first-floor windows, although it is now partially cut away. An area of brick on the left may indicate the former position of a window on the first half-landing of the stairs. To the left, there is a 20th-century single-storey flat-roofed extension. The left return (rear) facade of the 17th-century range has a moulded string over the first-floor windows.
The interior has been partially inspected and shows 20th-century alterations on the first and second floors. A winder staircase connects the first and second floors, and parts of the roof structure are visible through a hatch, featuring curved principals, trenched purlins, and extended collars.
