Description

Barton Hall is a former chapel and school hall located on Gloucester Street in Cirencester. It dates from the early 19th century, with a mid-19th century addition to the front and further 19th century additions to the rear. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone, while the addition is made of ashlar, and it features a Welsh slate roof with a gable facing and no visible stack.

The front of the building has three round-headed windows with glazing bars. The central window retains its 19th century fanlight glazing, while the others have 20th century glazing. A moulded string course above the windows continues as a coping to the gable. There is a lozenge-shaped plaque in the tympanum that reads "CIRENCESTER RDC." The building has flush quoins at the left and right angles.

The mid-19th century single-storey addition at the front includes two 2/1-pane sash windows set in round-headed moulded stone architraves with a bold keystone, flanked by pilasters and bracketed cills. These windows are accompanied by a pair of six-panel doors with a simple fanlight in a similar surround, and there is a shallow plinth. The addition features an applied Doric order with four pilasters, a frieze, and a moulded cornice, topped with a blocking course.

On the right side of the building, there are two tall round-headed windows with coloured leaded glazing. A lean-to addition at the rear connects the main range to a single-storey range, which has round-headed windows on the left and right sides with glazing bars in a diamond pattern and coloured glass. The single-storey brick range at the rear has a concrete tile roof and a brick stack at the right end, along with six 2-light chamfered stone-mullion windows that have 4-centred arch-headed lights and metal casements. The interior has not been inspected.
