Description

The Old Wheatsheaf is a former public house that has been converted into a house. It dates from the 16th century and 17th century, with extensions from the 18th century and alterations from the 19th century, along with some minor changes in the 20th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a Collyweston slate roof and featuring three brick gable stacks, one of which has a stone base.

The structure has a T-plan layout and is two storeys high with a two-bay side front. Each floor has two three-light plain casement windows, all with timber lintels. On the Castlegate front, there is a 20th-century door with vertical side lights, which is sheltered by a contemporary wooden gabled porch, flanked by small fixed two-light windows. Above the right-hand window, there is a carved stone panel depicting a wheatsheaf, a remnant from when the building operated as a pub.

On the first floor, there is a two-light mullioned casement window with a moulded ashlar surround, and above this, a gabled dormer. To the left of the main structure is a single bay, two-storey service block with a pantile roof and a brick gable stack. Beyond this, there is a lower range with a pair of planked doors and a gateway, both also under pantile roofs, leading to a rear yard. Inside, the 16th-century kitchen garret features an oak clasped purlin roof with some smoke blackening, while the 17th-century garret stair head has a newel with a finial, framed plastered rush parapet, and a chamfered handrail.
