Description
Toytop Farmhouse and farm buildings are a late 18th to early 19th century farmhouse and a range of farm buildings located on the north side of West Auckland Road in Houghton Bank. The structures are built of coursed sandstone rubble with pantiled roofs and brick chimney stacks. The farmhouse features a hearth-passage plan and is two stories high with three bays, consisting of two sections. The ends have alternating quoins, and there is a straight joint to the left of the central entrance. The left section is a later addition. The central entrance has a partly-glazed four-panel door, with a 20th-century three-light casement window to the left and a four-pane sash window to the right. Above the door, there is a small six-pane sash window, flanked by sashes that have had their intermediate glazing bars removed. The roof has raised verges, with rebuilt ridge and right end stacks.
To the right of the farmhouse is a single-storey range of farm buildings, which includes byres and sheds, featuring altered and blocked openings. This range steps down the bankside and has four changes of roof level. The farmhouse also has a continuous single-storey rear outshut. The farm buildings are included for their group value with the farmhouse.
