Description
Legs Cross is a significant historical monument located on the west side of Dere Street in Bolam. It dates back to the 9th century and is constructed from sandstone. The structure consists of a rough, rectangular base that stands about one metre high, supporting a badly worn, tapering cross shaft that reaches approximately 1.5 metres in height. The upper end of the west face of the cross shaft is said to have featured interlacing ornamentation. Legs Cross likely marked the subdivision of a major Anglo-Saxon estate centered on Gainford village. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
