Description
The memorial fountain, dated 1877, is located at the junction with the road to Ford in Stanhope. It was built on behalf of the people of Stanhope to commemorate the late J.J. Roddam of New-Town. Constructed from sandstone ashlar and pink granite, the fountain is designed in the Gothic style. It features a round-cornered step leading to a granite basin, which is sheltered by a gabled cusped canopy. This canopy rests on corbelled granite shafts that have stone clasping bands and foliage capitals. The shafts are recessed and support an inner arch, with additional shafts at the corners. The structure has three diminishing upper stages topped with a blind arcade and steeply-sloped coping, adorned with extensive Gothic ornamentation. A panel on the left side commemorates Roddam. At the time of the survey, one shaft was missing.
