Description
The Methodist Chapel in Stanhope is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel built in 1871. It features coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, a plinth, and quoins, topped with a Welsh slate roof and stone gable copings. The building has a Greek cross plan and is designed in a free Norman style. The nave includes short aisles and a chancel.
On the south elevation, there is a gabled center with boarded doors set in double-chamfered round-headed surrounds on both sides, and keyhole windows above. Stepped buttresses with roll-moulded gablets above the eaves flank paired ground-floor and stepped triple gallery lights, which are recessed under arches. A pierced quatrefoil is located in the gable peak, along with a stone ring/cross finial. The gallery has a sill string, and the left and right returns each have one round-headed chamfered window, while the aisles have two. Moulded finials with wrought iron scrolls adorn the gabled copings of the aisles, which also feature block kneelers.
