Description

The Market Cross, located in Stanhope Market Place, was built in 1871. It features pinkish sandstone steps leading up to a pecked Frosterley limestone cross. The structure includes four older square steps, which have iron clamps on the top step. Atop the steps is a tall, tapered, ring-headed cross set on a chamfered base. The top step is inscribed with "MARKET GRANTED 1669 CROSS ERECTED 1871."
