Description
The Phoenix Inn is a late 18th-century inn located on Front Street in Stanhope. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, featuring a plinth and quoins, and has a Welsh slate roof adorned with roll-moulded ridge tiles and both stone and brick chimneys. The building stands two storeys high and has three wide bays.
The entrance consists of a six-panel door with a large overlight, set between the first and second windows, framed by alternate-block jambs and a flat stone lintel. There are similar surrounds for a renewed six-panel door and overlight with glazing bars at the right end, as well as for tripartite sashes that also have glazing bars and projecting stone sills. The left corner of the building is rounded below the level of the flat-coped parapet. The roof is low-pitched and hipped, featuring two ashlar ridge chimneys with bands, one of which is at the right end and made of new brick.
