Description
This is a circa 1823 castle wall incorporating a market lodge (now an office), a gateway, and a bus shelter, located in Stanhope Market Place. The wall is constructed of snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, and has stone-flagged roofs. The rear wall is attached to the castle and angles forward along the Market Place frontage, connecting with a two- and one-storey, two-bay lodge to the left. To the right, the wall is two-storey and one-bay, incorporating a shelter and a room above.
A moulded Tudor-arched gateway features boarded double vehicle doors. The wall is buttressed with a battlemented parapet, stepped over the gate, and boasts roll-moulded crenellations. The lodge on the left has a plinth and quoins, with a central door set within a chamfered round-cornered surround and drip mould. The ground-floor windows and a first-floor window are similarly treated with sloping sills and recessed chamfered surrounds. A first-floor string runs along the building, while the battlemented parapet continues over the right return gable.
The right-hand shelter, built in a matching style, has angle buttresses framing a boarded door within a square-headed surround. A first-floor stone balcony with pierced stone brackets sits above, with a square-headed, blocked doorway positioned behind. A dated shield is located below the battlemented parapet.
