Description
The Vane Mausoleum, built in 1850 by William Burn for Henry Vane, the second Duke of Cleveland who died in 1864, is located approximately 100 metres north of the Church of St. Mary. This mausoleum is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a stone-flagged roof with stone gable copings. Designed in the Gothic style, it has an L-plan layout. The front gable is adorned with double doors that have elaborate iron hinges set within a moulded two-centred arch, and there is a trefoil opening above. The gable coping is roll-moulded and topped with a sceptre finial. The mausoleum has blank returns and a similar gable on the set-back right wing, which contains a two-centred-arched window. The gables are buttressed, adding to the structure's distinctive appearance.
