Description

Number 28 is a house, which was later used as a shop and flat, and is now a house again. It dates from the late 18th century, with a shop added in the mid-19th century. The exterior features painted incised stucco with painted ashlar dressings, and the roof is covered with concrete tiles, supported by rubble and brick chimneys. The building has three storeys and a three-window range.

On the right side, there is a wide arch leading to Broad Gates. A half-glazed door is set back to the left of the central bay, framed in painted stone. To the left of the door, a bay window with quadrant returns features a plain sash and 4-pane sashes in the returns, along with slender pilasters and a shallow entablature. To the right of the door, a narrow square bay shop window has a 4-pane front sash, with a narrow Ionic pilaster on the inner angle and a chamfered pilaster on the outer angle, topped with an entablature that has a prominent dentilled cornice. The upper floors have plain sashes with painted flat stone lintels, and the second-floor windows are recessed, touching the eaves, with flat stone sills. The roof has right gable coping on a moulded kneeler, and the end chimneys are made of rubble on the left and yellow brick on the right.

The interior has not been inspected. In front of the left bay, wrought-iron railings curve towards the door and have simple spike heads, with a left end stay and a bombe principal.
