Description

29 The Bank is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat. It dates from the early 18th century and incorporates some earlier materials, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exterior features painted incised stucco with painted ashlar dressings, and the roof is covered with stone slates, complete with stone gable coping and a chimney. The building has three storeys and a three-window range.

The left ground floor window has been enlarged at an unknown date to create a plate-glass display window, which lacks any decorative features. To the right, there is a blocked door with a tooled painted stone surround, now fitted with a 4-pane sash window. The central section has a keyed architrave, originally a window, which now contains a half-glazed shop door and a 5-pane overlight. The upper floors have plain sashes with similar keyed heads and plain jambs and sills, with the top floor windows being smaller. The eaves are adorned with a cyma recta cornice, and the roof features left gable coping on a cyma-moulded kneeler, with a chimney that is barely visible at the rear eaves.

Inside, there is a wide elliptical stone lintel in the cellar, which may date back to the 16th century. Each floor has diagonal fireplaces located in the rear left corner, and there are full-height bowed recesses next to the fireplaces, possibly once used for cupboards. The building also has a dogleg stair leading to the roof space, and the roof trusses include upper crucks with two levels of purlins.
