Description

This listing describes a group of three small headstones belonging to the Raine family, located about 20 metres south of the Church of St. Romald in Romaldkirk. The headstones are made of sandstone and commemorate William Raine, who died in 1753; Ann Raine, who died in 1771; and John Raine, who died in 1772.

The headstone for William Raine features a small semicircular top with a moulded inner edge and a sunk panel that contains an inscription. The reverse side has a poem that begins with the lines: "The thread of life was Early spun and Death eclipsed my morning sun From my sad Cradle to my sable (chest) Poor pilgrim I did find few years of rest But now I rest my soul ..." although part of it is illegible.

Ann Raine's headstone has a scrolled top above a cornice, with a raised panel that bears an inscription of a largely illegible poem starting with "Lament her not ...".

The headstone for John Raine features a scrolled-pedimented top and a raised panel with the inscription: "HERE lyes (sic) the BoDy of John Raine who Died April 28 1772 Aged 81 years."
