Description
The Hickson tomb, located approximately 20 meters south of the Church of St Mary and 2 meters south of the Smith tomb in Barnard Castle, is a chest tomb dedicated to Sarah Hickson, the wife of James, and dates from around 1832. It features pulvinated angle pilasters on a plinth that supports a flat top with rounded edges. The sides are made of stone slabs, with the north and south sides displaying shaped borders that frame long inscriptions. The inscription on the north side reads: "Sleeps her dust beneath this stone/ Her happy spirits fled/ Unto yonder glorious throne/ To reign with Christ our head/ There she meets her infant band/ Circling her in realms of light/ All before their Saviour stand/ Transported with delight." The south side states: "Sarah....mother of seven children of whom one survives."
