Description

Joan's Fruit and Freezer Centre and Kensington House is a shop with domestic accommodation above, dating from the early 18th century, with some alterations. The building features rendered masonry, a renewed pantiled roof, and rendered brick chimneys. It is two storeys high with a two-bay front. The entrance includes a 19th-century four-panel door with an overlight in the doorcase, and there is an early 20th-century glazed shopfront to the left. The windows have been replaced with sashes, featuring 12 panes on the first floor and 9 panes above. The steeply-pitched roof has a raised brick verge on the left side, with chimneys at the left end and ridge.

Inside, there is an early 18th-century staircase with three flights, an open-well design, and a cut-string style. The staircase has three column-on-vase balusters per tread supporting a wreathed and ramped handrail, and the landing rail features identical balusters. There is a 20th-century gabled rear addition that is not of special interest.

No. 10 and Kensington House are part of a larger, continuous three-storey, six-bay block, which includes Nos. 11 and 12 High Street. Nos. 10, 11, and 12 were previously listed as a single entry.
