Description

This is an early 18th-century shop with living space above, altered over time. It is located on the north side of High Street in Sedgefield. The building is constructed of rendered masonry and brick, with a renewed pantiled roof and a rendered brick chimney. The plan is a reversed U-shape.

The front of the building is three stories and irregular, with four bays. A late 20th-century glazed shop front occupies the centre. An early 20th-century window with paired sashes is on the left, and a late 20th-century casement window on the right. The original window openings above have been replaced with sashes and late 20th-century metal casements. The steeply-pitched roof has a raised brick verge to the right and a ridge chimney.

The right return has a replaced door with an overlight, set within a late 19th-century doorcase. To the left of the door is a 19th-century canted bay window, and to the right, a 16-pane sash window above a six-pane sash window. The rear of the building is two stories high with two three-story projecting, gabled stair wings. A mid-wall round-arched stair window features intersecting tracery. The right stair wing is from the early 18th century, featuring a two-span roof, and is both wider and later than the stair wing to the left.

Numbers 10 and 11 contribute to the group value and form the right section of a continuous three-story, six-bay block. They are included in this listing. Historically, numbers 10, 11 and 12 were listed originally as a single entry.
