Description

47 Market Street is a shop with accommodation above, dating from the early 18th century, with a later 18th-century front and 19th and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick, topped with a slate roof and brick end stacks, and features a central staircase plan.

The exterior consists of three storeys and three bays, with the central bay slightly projecting. Each floor has a three-window range of 2/2 sash windows, with added false lights above the first-floor windows. The windows have gauged brick flat-arched heads with painted keystones, and those on the first floor are linked to a plat band. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front. An elaborate late 19th-century eaves cornice with brick corbelling supports a low parapet. The rear of the building features mainly unhorned sashes, either 6/6 or 9/9, with two staircase windows in the centre; the upper window is a tall double 6/6 sash, while the lower has a round arched head.

Inside, the ground floor is mostly 20th-century, but the early 18th-century dog-leg staircase, which runs the full height of the house, retains turned balusters that are currently boarded over. Part of the wavy splat baluster balustrade is visible on the upper flights. The first floor has a mid-18th-century landing arch with plaster Chinese fret mouldings, a late 18th-century fireplace, and an early 19th-century fireplace with a cast-iron grate. It also includes a panelled cupboard, panelled shutters, and window seats. The second floor maintains its original layout and features panelled doors, mostly with HL hinges. The visible part of the roof is reported to be made of machine-cut red deal, suggesting it may date from the late 19th century or later.

47 Market Street is listed for its significant historic features, particularly the complete early 18th-century staircase, and its conversion from a house to commercial premises.
