Description

Townfield House is a building that was originally a shop and village institute reading room, now converted into a single house. It was constructed around 1863 by S.S. Teulon for Rev. Daniel Capper. The building is made of coursed squared sandstone in irregular sizes and various colours, with ashlar dressings and a roof of grey and green slates.

The structure has a T-plan layout, with the shop located at the front and the reading room at the rear. The front range is one high storey with three bays, featuring a projecting centre that has a two-centred stone-arched window beneath a half-dormer and a steeply-pitched hipped roof. The flanking bays have lower projecting three-light windows, all with wooden two-centred arches, situated under pent hipped roofs. The steeply-pitched roof includes a chimney at the rear.

On the left return gable, there is a blocked door beneath a stone lintel, along with paired attic lights. The lower rear wing has various outshuts under pent and gabled roofs, and the reading room at the far end has lancet windows. All windows are surrounded by stone.

Inside, the former shop features chamfered beams, some original wrought iron door fittings, and some inserted doors. The former reading room has a chamfered stone surround for the fireplace.
