Description

The building is a former school and attached house, now a single house named Old Church House, dating to circa 1862 and designed by S.S. Teulon for Rev. Daniel Capper of Newbiggin. It is constructed of snecked sandstone with varied colours, incorporating ashlar dressings, a plinth, and quoins. The roof is diaper-patterned with purple and green slates. The design is in the Early English style and arranged in a lower, L-shaped plan. The north front, of two storeys and three irregular bays, has a lower section to the right. A 6-panel door is set in the central bay, accessed by side steps with a chamfered-coped parapet. To the left of the door are three grouped shouldered lights with sloping sills and stone surrounds, stepped over small lancets flanking the heads of the lights. A narrow light is located to the right of the door with a flat stone lintel and alternate-block jambs, and above the door are two small shouldered lights, the left one shorter on a sill band. The steeply-pitched roof comprises three sections, with wide, left and lower right parallel slopes connected by a narrow strip from the eaves of the left side to the ridge of the right. A substantial, coped chimney, with one set-back, is located to the right of the highest roof section, featuring a roll-moulded string raised over a central pierced bellcote. A central, single-storey wing extends to the rear, with a low right extension under a roof of two pitches and a tall, off-set chimney between the pitches.
