Description
Nos. 18 and 19 Old Elvet are two houses built in the late 18th century, with significant alterations made in the 19th century. They feature a stone plinth and are constructed of mottled, light red brick in English garden wall bond. The houses have a Welsh slate roof with brick copings and chimneys. They stand three storeys high and consist of one and two bays. The entrances have 6-panel doors with overlights, although the overlight of No. 19 is blocked, and the top door panels are glazed. These doors are set in architraves beneath later pedimented hoods, positioned to the left of No. 18 and off-centre on No. 19. The windows are tripartite sash windows with glazing bars, with the top and bottom left windows renewed in the early 19th century, although the lower window has lost its bars. There is a later 19th-century oriel window at the first floor left, and the houses feature three-brick floor bands, ridge and rear chimneys, and tumbled-in brickwork on the gable ends.
Inside, No. 18 is reported to have an open-string staircase with a moulded handrail and two turned balusters per tread, square newels with knob finials, and a continuous curved tread end. No. 19 has an open-string staircase with a moulded ramped handrail on a diagonal lattice balustrade.
