Description
No. 16 Old Elvet is a house that likely dates back to the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The exterior features incised stucco set on a stone plinth, a Welsh slate roof with rendered coping, and brick stacks that are partly rendered. The building has two storeys and an attic, with two bays. There is an off-centre six-panel door framed by a thin architrave and topped with a bracketed cornice hood. A boot scraper recess is located by the door. The late 19th-century sash windows have stone sills, and those in the gabled dormers are adorned with bargeboards and finials, resting on the eaves. The left roof coping defines a canted gable end, while the compound right end stack, located behind the ridge, has been rebuilt at the upper parts. There is also a low left rear end stack.
Inside, the house features a dogleg open-string staircase from the 18th century, which has a moulded ramped handrail supported by two turned balusters per tread, fluted rectangular newels, and shallow risers.
