Description

This is a mid-18th century house, altered and extended upwards in the early 19th century. It is located in Durham and Framwellgate. The house is constructed of mottled reddish brick in an English garden wall bond pattern (three bricks long, one brick high) with a Welsh slate roof. It has four storeys and two bays. To the left is a six-panel door set in an architrave, topped with a bracketed cornice hood. The windows are 12-pane sashes, each set beneath a soldier arch. Horizontal bands of bricks mark each floor level. No chimneys are visible externally.

The interior is reported to contain an open-string dogleg staircase with a moulded handrail consisting of two column-and-vase balusters per tread. This feature was documented by F.F. Johnson in Historic Staircases of Durham City Durham in 1970.
