Description

The Smith tomb, located approximately 20 meters south-east of the Church of St Mary in Barnard Castle, is a chest tomb dedicated to John Smith, dating from around 1844. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features Tuscan angle pilasters with necking, supporting a slightly rounded top with rounded edges, and has recessed side slabs. The inscription on the south side commemorates John Smith of Middleham, described as "the highly esteemed training groom of the late Lords Strathmore and Queensberry, the late Duke of Cleveland and the present Earl Glasgow." He died on April 12th, 1844, at the age of 75.
