Description
The Beckwith headstones, located approximately 10 metres south of the vestry of the Church of St. Ebba in Ebchester, date from the 18th century and are made of sandstone ashlar. There are two headstones. The first is a slab about one metre high with a shaped top, inscribed to Ann, the wife of Cuthbert Beckwith, who died in 1778. The reverse side features the inscription, "Them also / which sleep in Jesus / will God bring with him," in good lettering. The second headstone is about 60 centimetres high, with a moulded edge and a shaped top, dedicated to Cuthbert Beckwith, who died in 1744 at the age of 72; the inscription is on the west face, while the east face displays a carving of a winged skull, an hour-glass, and crossed bones.
