Description

Barningham Village School is a school building constructed around 1875. It features roughly-coursed rubble with rock-faced quoins and tooled ashlar dressings, topped by a graduated stone slate roof, except for the 20th-century hardrow tiles at the rear. The building is single-storey and consists of three bays. It has 3-light chamfered mullioned windows that hold 2-pane casements. Above the center, there is a gablet with an inscription that reads 'ERECTED BY THE FAMILY OF THE LATE LADY AUGUSTA HENRIETTA MILBANKE....', along with a moulded circular surround for a clock and a ball finial. The gables are coped on moulded kneelers, and there is a central circular metal ridge vent.

On the left side, the building features a triplet of lancet windows, a wrought-iron cross fleury finial, and a lower gabled porch to the left, which contains a boarded door with ornamental scrolled hinges under a segmental-pointed arch. The right side has a similar triplet of lancets and a gabled bellcote with a segmental-pointed arch and wrought-iron finial. To the right, there is a 20th-century flat-roofed extension that includes a re-set doorway from the former porch on the left return. The rear elevation displays a projecting central gabled wing with a 3-light mullioned window.

Inside, the main hall features two arch-braced collar-beam trusses with upper king posts. The date on the inscription has weathered away, but it is noted that Lady Milbanke, who is commemorated, died in 1874. The building is included for its group value. The 20th-century extensions flanking the rear wing are not of special interest, except for the re-set doorway mentioned earlier.
