Description

The Cholera Monument, located approximately 30 metres south of the Church of St Mary in Barnard Castle, commemorates those who died during the cholera epidemic of 1847. The monument is made of sandstone ashlar and features a chamfered plinth with a panelled pedestal leading to a double chamfered base of the cross. The cross has concave shapes at the junctions of its tapered arms. An inscription on the pedestal honors the deceased, who were buried in the surrounding unmarked area of the graveyard, although the inscription has eroded over time.
