Description
No. 25 Low Startforth Road is a cottage dating from the mid-17th century, originally part of a larger house. The roof pitch was lowered in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of roughly-squared stone with cut dressings, and it has a 20th-century concrete tile roof, except for the stone slates on the outshut kitchen. It stands two storeys plus an attic and features two narrow bays.
The left bay has a renewed door set in a window architrave that has been re-set on the lower jambs of the original doorway, with a relieving arch above. To the right, there is a 4-pane sash window with a tooled 19th-century lintel, and the original door lintel has been re-set as a sill. The first floor has sashes that have lost their glazing bars, set in architraves. There are also attic windows that are now blocked, and an old stack is located at the right end. The right return shows a small blocked attic light.
At the rear right, a stair turret features a 12-pane Yorkshire sash window and a blocked two-light flat mullioned window on the left return. The left side has a one-storey kitchen outshut.
Inside, there is a wooden winder stair in the turret. The first floor has a 17th-century ceiling with six square panels and moulded plastered beams, with a central beam resting on a massive stone corbel in the south wall. The roof contains two nailed collar-beam trusses that reuse older timbers.
The building was extended further west until the later 18th century, coinciding with the construction of the adjacent No. 23.
