Description
Startforth Lodge is a house that was originally built in the early 19th century and was remodeled and enlarged in 1853 for Robert and Mary Lodge. The south and east elevations are made of squared tooled stone with tooled ashlar dressings, while the north wall is constructed of coursed rubble and the west wall is rendered. The roof is made of graduated Lakeland slate.
The building has two storeys and features three bays on the left and one bay on the right. It has a chamfered plinth. The left part of the house has a central carved door with two shoulder-arched glazed panels and a two-pane overlight, all set in an open wood porch with shaped spandrels and a pent stone slab roof. The slab above the door is inscribed with 'R & M LODGE' along with the date. The windows are 12-pane sash windows with tooled lintels and slightly projecting sills. The hipped roof has two stepped-and-banded stacks on the ridge.
The two-bay right return displays similar sash windows, with a ground-floor canted bay on the left and a two-storey corniced bay on the right. The rear of the house features a central arched stair window, which has a radial head surrounded by imposts on the keystone.
Inside, there is an inner door with coloured glass and an overlight. The interior includes six-panel doors and folding panelled shutters throughout. The stair hall has arches on consoles, and the dog-leg cut-string stair features stick balusters, moulded newels, a moulded and wreathed handrail, a curtail step, and shaped tread ends.
