Description
The war memorial is located outside All Saints’ Roman Catholic Church, overlooking Kitswell Road in Lanchester. It is a tall hooded Calvary made of oak, approximately 5 meters high, featuring a metal figure of the crucified Christ. The wooden cross stands on a stony cairn. A polished stone plaque set into the front of the cairn bears the main inscription, which reads: "CRUCIFIED JESUS/ HAVE MERCY ON THE SOULS/ OF/ (12 NAMES)/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 18/ R.I.P." The cairn is elevated on a concrete block, which has another polished stone plaque that records the dedication for the Second World War, stating: "CRUCIFIED JESUS HAVE MERCY/ ON THE SOULS OF/ (5 NAMES)/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-45."
