Description
The War Memorial is located directly outside the east end of St George’s Church. It features a crucifix on a square pedestal with a moulded top, all set on a tall square base that also has a moulded top. The tall Latin cross has a triangular pediment and depicts Christ in Agony, with a bearded head crowned with thorns. His arms are outstretched, fingers clasped, and a loose loincloth is knotted to the right side. The right knee is bent, and the feet are superimposed.
On the front face of the pyramidal cap, there is an inscription in raised Roman capitals that reads: "HERE BENEATH THE SHADOW OF THE CROSS/BEHOLD THE NAMES OF OUR BRETHREN OF /CULLERCOATS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE /GREAT WAR 1914-1918/LET FUTURE GENERATIONS KEEP THEM/IN CONTINUAL REMEMBRANCE /GIVING UNTO GOD THE THANKS AND THE GLORY."
Beneath this inscription, the names of 82 Fallen are inscribed in three columns on the front face of the base, although many of these names are now illegible. There are also nine holes in the front face of the base that were used to fix a missing bronze plaque.
