Description
47A Percy Gardens is a look-out post and gun emplacement built around 1916 for the army. This seven-storey tower is made of reinforced concrete and features a gun emplacement on the roof. The north face of the building has a plain boarded door with raised corners, while the main south front displays six-sided windows in round bays on the four upper floors. Inside, there is a concrete stair with an iron handrail leading from the ground floor to the roof space, although the trap-door to the roof is now blocked. It is historically noted that this structure was likely constructed after the German bombardment of the north-east coast, serving as a fall-of-shot tower and for range-finding of the guns at Tynemouth Battery.
