Description
The Adamson memorial drinking fountain, located opposite number 68 on Beverley Terrace in Cullercoats, was erected around 1888 by friends of Bryan John Huthwaite Adamson. The site was given by the Duke of Northumberland. This memorial is made of sandstone and features marble panels, along with cast iron lion masks. It has two steps leading to an octagonal plinth, which has marble inlaid panels beneath a cornice. The bowl at the top of the plinth collects water from four lion masks set in a floral-patterned base of the obelisk above. An inscription on the east panel reads: "ERECTED BY A FEW FRIENDS IN MEMORY OF BRYAN JOHN HUTHWAITE ADAMSON, LIEUT. R.N. COMMANDING H.M.S. WASP WHICH SAILED FROM SINGAPORE SEPTEMBER 10 1887 AND WAS NEVER HEARD OF AFTER. THE SITE WAS GIVEN FOR THIS MEMORIAL BY HIS GRACE THE DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND." The obelisk is adorned with carved decorations of dolphins, shells, and ribbon patterns, as well as shields featuring mottoes.
