Description
Newport Market is a building located on Upper Dock Street, designed in the French Renaissance style using red-brown rock-faced stone with pale ashlar dressings. It consists of three storeys plus an attic beneath a mansard roof, which has been rebuilt at the front. The façade features nine bays with mullion and transom windows that have sash glazing. A central tower rises above the main front, topped with a steep lead roof and louvres, and includes windows at two levels. The tower is divided into three stages and has corner pinnacles. The end bays are accentuated by steep pavilion roofs that include stone dormers. There are two-storey oriel windows in the second and third bays, as well as the seventh and eighth bays.
The central entrance is arched and rises two storeys, flanked by four shops on each side. The building has returns of two bays that maintain a similar style. The elevations facing Griffin Street and Market Street feature single-storey stone walls leading to the aisles of the market hall. The High Street elevation is constructed in Portland stone on a granite base, exhibiting an inter-war classical style with four storeys and fifteen windows fitted with metal casement glazing. It has a dentil cornice, and on the second floor, the second, central, and fourteenth bays are adorned with aedicules and balustrades. The first floor is channelled and features a full-width canopy over the shopfronts.
The corner bays are splayed, with six windows returning to Market Street and eight windows returning to Griffin Street. The interior features a partially glazed barrel roof supported by lattice girders, with a central hall measuring 192 feet by 145 feet and a height of 53 feet. There are steps leading up to side and central galleries, and the rear wall of the Upper Dock Street block displays moulded Renaissance detailing.
